Upper Shin Salmon Pools.
Dam
As the name suggests, this pool is the run out below the Lower Shin Diversion Dam. It is a race, reasonably deep and fast flowing. Fish move up to the dam to try to migrate up through the system. Fish it from the outflow; stand on the walkway with the weather station on it. Carry on down to the gabions filled with rocks which create an artificial waterfall at the tail of the pool. You can fish below this fall as well as fish may be waiting there to ascend.
Wall
Walk down from the Ladies Pool parking place, continue down, through the gate, keeping the wall on your right. When you get to the river, there is a small weir - fish from here, around the corner until the flow is too slow to allow the fly to fish.
Ladies
The Ladies race is at the top of the pool, fish it down from the middle of the river with a short line. When it widens, lengthen the line and carry on down to the remains of the pier on the far side and the iron gate on the Achany side casting across to the marker post on the far bank. The Ladies shallows is the outflow of the pool and is worth a few casts on your way to the point. The Ladies Point is the area opposite the wooden bridge on the Station bank. Cast out towards this and move the fly quickly back as there is not much current. This pool can be easily fished from both banks.
Aquarium
Fish all the way down, it is very good if there is a ripple on the water. The skated fly works well here. Fish show a lot and you can go for them like trout.
Phils
The current takes the stream over to the far bank. You can walk down the middle of the river but be careful as it gets deep on both sides of the sand bar.
Fish around the rock over on the far bank and at the head of the pool.
Wood
Deep and slow. Fish a skated fly around the groins. Fish the tail as it goes out under the bridge.
Suspension
Fish the obvious run under the bridge - fish lie there; you can see them from the bridge with Polaroid’s.
Station
This pool has recently been changed by the gravle inprovements. There is now a well defined stream and fish should lie on both sides.
Middle
An obvious run in - difficult to fish, you have to dibble and dabble between the rocks. Short line at the top of the pool, lengthening as the pool widens. Fish all the way down, there are lies all the way down. A good pool when fish are in the mood. Continue down beyond old pier, past large boulder on the Station side.
Mill
Start in the fast streamy water at the top, and treat the lower bit like the Aquarium. Good in a wind with a skated fly or a fast retrieve.
Ruin
This forms part of the Cottage pools. Cross the river and walk left handed along the new walkway.
Ruin is in two parts, the top fast water and the lovely tail. Fish the run until the flow is too slow for the fly.
Cottage 1
No need to wade here, fish from waters edge. Fish the run in and where the pool widens, opposite the cottage, aim for the little bay on the far side and continue down to where the pool runs out under the tree,
Cottage 2
This is a trench with shelving rocks, which then goes over a waterfall. Bad wading, use a stick. Cast over towards the reeds on the far bank and keep going all the way down until you are standing on the islands in the middle of the river and fish the glide as it leaves the pool.
Cottage 3
Start at the run at the top, stay out of the water, creep along the edge. The pool turns after the run and flattens out. Fish all the way down until you are under the obvious tree at the end of the pool . The fish take on the far side and also in the middle of the stream.
Cottage 4
A wonderful pool - full of fish. Takes a long time to fish it properly. Start at the top and fish the white water with a shortish line and maybe a heavy fly - be careful not to get stuck on the rocks, which are slimy and weedy. Continue down past the large boulders on the roadside and really concentrate efforts where the fence comes down into the water. If you look carefully, you will see and old iron bedstead - this is a good taking place. Keep the fly moving by skating or mending the line. Concentrate hard again when you get to the little groin on the roadside - fish lie above, around and below it. Continue down until the pool runs out at the tail, they also lie under the trees at the bottom.
Pandoras Box
A short run befor Miltons. A suprising number of fish are caught in the tail of the ruun on the left bank.
Miltons
Another long pool, and can be fished from both sides. From the Achany side, park and walk across the field with a hut in it. Start fishing about 5 yards above the hut; get into the water carefully to avoid disturbing the fish. You may need to roll cast here to avoid getting hung up in the trees. Fish the run down until it peters out. Fish lie on far side of the current. Keep moving down the pool, fishing the nearside stream and fish all around the pyramid rock in the middle of the pool. Cover all the glides close to you and further out if you can reach. The fish lie all over the pool and they will take all through the pool. There is a rock at the end of the pool with orange crocosmia growing on it and this is a good place to end, as you will have covered all the fish by then.
Miltons from the Station side is very much the same but you will be able to cover the runs on the opposite side of the water much easier. At the head of the pool the fish take opposite the large boulder above the hut. Carry on fishing around the pyramid and cover all the glides. The wading in this pool is difficult so do be careful and use a wading stick.
Cliff
This is below Miltons on the Station side. The run comes in close to the bank and if fish are running it is worth a few casts, as fish rest here on their way up.
Upper Eleanors
Fished from the Achany side. There is an obvious run at the top of the pool and the stream divides half way down. Cover the nearside run with a short line. Then using a progressively longer line, cast over the other stream, aiming at the run by the large rock. You will have to do a lot of line mending to achieve getting the fly in the right place. It is worth persevering as it takes the fish by surprise - the skated fly works a treat here, watch out for the bank behind you.
Eleanors
Start out in the middle of the river to fish the top section; a short line is adequate here. Fish up in the whiter water and move down, rock hopping on the islands until it goes into the main pool. The main part of the pool is best fished from the bank, keep moving down the stream until the fly stops coming round in the current.
Grudie
Start high up, stand on the island and fish down with a short line until the pool opens out. Cross over the Grudie Burn (it has a dam higher up so does not run unless there has been lots of rain and the water spills over the dam). Keep fishing down - fish lie on the far side of the stream and also in the middle. Fishes much better fronm the station side, you cross at the white post half way to Meadow.
Meadow
A very productive and easy pool to fish for beginners and the more infirm rods. Start high up and fish it all the way down - concentrate on the middle - where there are shelving rocks on the far bank. There is a stone in the water that the current will take your line over - fish lie all around here. The tail of the pool is good in the evening.
Fir
This is a series of 3 small pools. The best being the first one. Start up by the waterfall - fish the stream on the far side by the fir tree. Cast over towards the tree all the way down –
fish often take on the lip of the fall as it goes into Fir 2.
Fir 2 has two streams - fish lie all the way down far side of the far stream.
Fir 3 is a run close into the bank - worth a flick if fish have been running.
Fir can by fished from both banks.
Field
This can be fished from either bank. Cross over at the crossing place above Lady Herbert and walk up. There is a very good run, start high up and go all the way down, the best taking place is opposite where the Field Burn comes into the pool.
Cinda's
This was considered to be the best pool on the river before the Hydro Dam. In high water it is great fun to fish all the way down but be careful and use a wading stick - it can be difficult to land fish if you are in the middle of the river because of the Alder trees on the Achany bank. You have to wade down the middle of the river below the trees and fish to both sides of you, this is really only worth doing if the river is high, i.e. if the Grudie is running, Field will be running as well so use your judgement, the current might be too strong.
Lady Herbert
A difficult pool to fish well. Can be fished from both sides but the Pot does not fish well from the Station side but the rest of the pool fishes better from this side.
The Achany side of Lady Herbert: - fish the run above the pool; this is good early in the season for grilse. Move down to the Pot, stand behind the large boulder and cast out across the stream - the water is oily looking here, skating the fly is effective here, mend the line to control the speed of the fly. The stream goes out over the far side - cover this section thoroughly. Move down to the groin that has been built in the river, cast over to the far stream and let the line belly around the islet in the middle of the stream, then mend the line over it and let it fish out.
This sounds complicated but the ghillies will show you. Move down to fish the run out, concentrate around the island in the tail - good place in June/July.
Gate
A little run- difficult to fish well - good in high water.
Beech
Fishes very well from both banks. The stream is on the Station side. Fish it down concentrating on the middle section where there is a rock in the centre. The tail is good also.
Frying Pan
This is a pool with 3 sections, Handle, Middle and the Pan. Can be fished from both sides but is mostly approached from the Achany side. The Handle needs a short line across the stream towards the shelving rocks on the far bank. The middle section is tricky to fish and the fly gets caught on a rock in the middle of the stream which causes a back eddy. Fish take between the two runs in the mirrored water. The Pan is where the pool opens out - there is a section where the fly is sucked down but the fish lie here so persevere. It fishes better from the far side but the wading is awful. Fish down to the lip of the falls and cast out to the far bank.
Rocky
Can be fished from both banks. Start at the white water at the head of the pool and move onto the piers casting across the stream. The fish lie off the ends of the piers, so it is easier to cover those from the Station side. They also lie all down the pool so each side has its advantages. The tail of the pool is dominated by a large rock in the middle and fish lie around this and in the glide going out of the pool.
Broad
Again fishable from both banks. Achany bank - fish the run at the top and watch where the stream goes into the centre of the pool at the bottom, the fish show here but it is not easy to cover them easily, try wading out but go easy and use a stick. The flow goes out towards the bushes on the far side.
Station side - Do the best you can at the top of the pool, hopping from rock to rock, but it is easier to cover the fish in the tail from this side and keep contact with them should you hook one. Good place for the skated fly again.
Grief
The deepest pool at approx. 3 metres. There is a large rock at the top of the pool called the Pulpit - you should stand beside it and fish with a short line over to the far bank. Lengthen your line to let the fly fish the narrow stretch of water up against the rock face of the cliff on the far bank of the pool. Get off the Pulpit and come back onto the bank. Cast over towards the rock face again and carry on towards the little bay above the glide, which goes out of the pool. Allow the fly to come across the glide and hang behind the island in the middle of the stream. If you hook a fish here be prepared to run after it as it will probably go down into the Lower Shin water, they are fairly tolerant when you go thundering past them! It is a difficult place to play fish of any size over a grilse because of the shelving rocks that they love to wind themselves around, but it gives great sport.
